The East Stroudsburg University Coach Called A Timeout, Retired, Walked Off The Field and Drove Away #PowerMovesOnly

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.East Stroudsburg University Head Football Coach Denny Douds has led the Warriors to hundreds of wins over his career.

On Saturday, he made a big announcement to his players during the last home game of the season. He will be stepping aside.

“I nudged the official in front of me and I said, ‘Sir, we are going to call a fourth timeout. I know that is illegal, you’re going to penalize it, but that’s OK. I am retiring.’ I called timeout with four seconds to go, blew the whistle, the kids came in and I told them this is what we are doing,” said Coach Douds.

East Stroudsburg lost Saturday’s game to Ohio Dominican.

Now THIS is how you retire.  No press conferences.  No locker room announcements to the media.  No planned out swan song seasons, a league wide tour receiving gifts and praise like Jeter.  Just tap the ref during a power sweep, call a timeout, and walk straight off the field forever.

This is my favorite part:

Douds says he didn’t want his plan to retire to become a distraction, so he waited until the last second, with another plan in place.

I didn’t want to be a distraction, so I bumped the referee, told him I was going to do something illegal, did the illegal thing, then walked right off the field as everyone stopped and stared, and peeled out of the parking lot to go get some dinner.  And he got his team a penalty!  The team lost the game.  Maybe they would have won without that penalty and with their head coach.

But whatever.  Power move city.  And my dude earned it.  The winningest coach (!!) of all active NCAA coaches.  53 seasons with the team (!!) and 45 as the head coach.

Retire however you please, sir.
