Texas A&M May Have Just Completed the Most Embarrassing Baseball/Softball Season Combo in NCAA History

Less than a year ago, Texas A&M's baseball team made it to Game 3 of the College World Series finals and entered this season as the No. 1 team in the country. The Aggies' softball team entered the 2025 NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed — ahead of back-to-back-to-back-to-back national champs Oklahoma — after compiling a 45-9 record.

And as we sit today, the baseball team is going to become the first ever preseason No. 1 to miss the NCAA Tournament barring a miraculous run in Hoover and the softball team just became the first ever No. 1 overall seed to lose a regional in the NCAA Tournament. This school literally invents new ways to disappoint.

On the baseball side of things, it's hard to have a worse season than what the Aggies managed to put together. They came into the year with huge expectations, even after losing their coach to their arch rival where he promptly won 42 games in his first season. And they turned those expectations into a 28-25 (11-19 SEC) season with losses that included Texas State, UTSA, New Mexico State and a sweep at the hands of Missouri, who went 3-27 in the SEC. Literally the only team the Tigers could win a single game against was A&M and they won all three.

But at least A&M fans had the softball team, which had an incredible year and finished just half a game behind Oklahoma — with one fewer game played — for the SEC regular season title before being named the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. And then softball decided to one-up baseball and became the only No. 1 overall seed to lose a regional.

There are plenty of fanbases who think their school's proclivities for choking are unequaled across the country, but A&M really might be something unique. It is pervasive, persistent and unrelenting. They had what were supposed to be the best teams in the country in two different sports and they both failed in ways nobody else had ever done before in the same year. It's almost impressive.

If you see an A&M fan this week, give them a hug. They need it.
