Austin Might Be My Favorite 'Jeopardy!' Champ of All Time

Once in a generation or so a legend comes along with that indefinable quality often referred to simply as “it.” That almost indescribable blend of talent, charisma, flair for the dramatic and ability to come up big in the biggest moments that cannot be faked. Gretzky had “it.” Jordan. Brady. Tiger Woods. It’s that personality so oversized it creates a gravitational pull that captures you into their orbit and  you can’t look away. And to those great champions we can add the newest Jeopardy! legend, Austin Rogers.

The man just has everything you look for in a Jeopardy! champion and more. All the knowledge of the world. The heart of a stone killer. Huge Double Jeopardy wagers. The Jaws-era Richard Dreyfuss hipster look. Goofy hand gestures. Quirky interview stories about falling asleep at a Korn and Disturbed show because their music is so boring. Dancing around to the Final Jeopardy music just to piss on the graves of the people he just buried. And utter fearlessness on his final wager, no matter how much he’s up. Last night he took $42,800 into Final, bet $22,800 and got it. Five games in and he’s already got $188,000 and there is no end in sight. To say nothing of his Twitter game:

I would never disrespect the names of Ken Jennings and Arthur Chu by just casually comparing some five-timer to them. But in Austin Rogers case, I’m willing to go there. I am ready to put him in their category. Q: “On October 3rd, 2017, Jerry Thornton said Austin Rogers had a chance of becoming this.” A:”What is the GOAT?” Correct.
