Cancel Culture Hits Another Comedian As Shane Gillis Will Not Be Joining SNL After Old Jokes Of His Were Deemed Offensive
This is unprecedented for SNL. I’m shocked they went down this road. They could have ignored it, Shane Gillis apologizes, and everyone forgets in a day. But instead they have completely kicked him off the show for making jokes about Asians, among other groups. Now, I don’t want to do 1,000 words about jokes and outrage culture and all of that, we’ve done that 1,000 times. But I do want to talk about how crazy it is that SNL decided to take a stand HERE. Honestly, nobody actually cared about this story. Sure, some people were mad about the jokes. They found them off-color. And to that Shane Gillis said:
I think that’s fair. I mean look at all of Eddie Murphy’s comedy from the 80’s. Pryor. Pretty much ANYONE. It’s all stuff that you can’t say now. But they are J-O-K-E-S. SNL can say “we don’t want people who have that sort of humor on our show”, and I guess I could kinda accept that, but that’s also a lie because pretty much every comedian has jokes that some group or race will not be fond of. Aziz has a joke in his new special about how in the move the Hangover there’s a line that goes “PAGING DOCTOR FAGGOT!”. And not just that, the line went over so well with test audiences, they used it in the trailer! That was 2009, just 10 years ago. I’m not sure what point I’m exactly making here, but it seems more problematic that comedians are being pushed out the door for making subjective jokes.
Shane has released a statement:
Just seems weird. It wasn’t a distraction. I’m sure nobody in that room would have cared, and if they did, he could explain the angle as a comedian he was going for.
I hope this doesn’t ruin Shane Gillis’ career. He swung and missed at jokes. Was it *too far*? Depends on who is asking. Do I think you should be fired for making jokes when your job is to make jokes? Absolutely not. Watch below and decide for yourself if you think the decision was correct.
PS: I’m more shocked he made it on the show to begin with. All the things I’ve seen from him doesn’t exactly strike me as SNL-worthy. I guess his audition was awesome.
