This Week in Bulletin Board Fodder: CBS' Chris Simms Says Brady Isn't a Top 5 QB

Chris Simms

MMQBWith Chris Simms, the former quarterback and NFL quality-control coach, now analyzing the NFL for Bleacher Report and CBS Sports. I reached out because I’ve liked his direct, blunt analysis this season…

The MMQB: Why the media gig?

Simms: I wanted to get into coaching or get on the track to be a GM. But for the last three years, I was basically a bitch boy, a quality-control coach and part-time scouting assistant, working with Josh McDaniels and the Patriots

The MMQB: How did you like working for Bill Belichick?

Simms: Loved it. He’s the smartest person I’ve ever been around. His attention to detail just blows me away. What I noticed about him is that the grind of coaching is not a grind to him. He loves it. It’s a way of life.

The MMQB: Best five quarterbacks in the NFL today.

Simms: I hate how everybody just says Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are the best two quarterbacks in football. They’re not. Are they gonna be 65 years old and we’ll all be saying, “Brady and Manning are still the best?” Tom Brady’s not in my top five. I mean, he’s still really good, but I like other guys better. I’d go Aaron Rodgers one, Andrew Luck two, Ben Roethlisberger three, Russell Wilson four and Peyton five.

Has anyone ever destroyed his chance to advance his career faster than Chris Simms did here?  This is like a political candidate coming out in the middle of a debate saying he hates God and freedom or something.  This is Dale and Brennan farting in the middle of a job interview.   Simms had everything going for him right up until he stuck his foot in his mouth and set fire to an otherwise promising career.  Because if you spend a day in the Patriots organization, breaking down film, timing street free agents in the 40 and washing out McDaniels coffee mug, that qualifies you to be the next head coach, GM or No. 1 network analyst.  But nothing disqualifies you faster than saying Brady isn’t a Top 5 quarterback.  By definition, anyone who puts five guys ahead of him is automatically not fit to evaluate football talent in any capacity.  I mean, look at that list.  Rogers is good and has that one title going for him, which is nice.  Luck?  He’s got as many picks this year as Derek Carr and the last the Patriots saw him they were reducing him to a brown stain on the Field Turf in the playoffs.  Roethlisberger just had his ass handed to him by the Jets and Russell Wilson is basically running the 1972 Oklahoma Wishbone offense.  And nothing more needs to be said about Brady vs Manning other than for all his supposed lack of “weapons,” Brady’s Pats have scored 5 fewer points than Denver.  FIVE.  Where does Simms think those points are coming from?  Michael Hoomanawanui?

So while I appreciate the sentiments about Belichick being the smartest person in the world, this last part is nothing short of career suicide.  Frankly Chris Simms was making more sense when he was getting arrested for being stoned out of his gourd.  @JerryThornton1
