The Bears Need To Go Get Another Running Back This Summer

This entire discussion basically started with this question

After after all the Jeanty smoke went up in smoke and the Bears likely got sniped in the 2nd round of the draft by the Browns and Patriots taking the Ohio State running backs shortly before the Bears' pick at #39 the glaring hole on the Bears offense (besides arguably LT) is at running back.

I said that I think the effect swap of David Montgomery for DeAndre Swift was "one of Poles' worst signings". Eddie basically fell out of his chair to say it was Nate Davis. After Eddie gas-lit me into a stance I wasn't making I decided to make the argument. There's no doubt that DeAndre Swift is a more productive and better player in Chicago than Nate Davis was here. That's a simple argument and not one I was even arguing.

I was arguing the logic. The Bears NEEDED a guard that offseason. Nate Davis was available and had shown that he was a competent player for the Tennessee Titans. Signing him turned out to be a HUGE flop. The logic in the signing was sound though. Similar to when the Bears made the trade for Claypool. They were DESPERATE for a WR at that time. Claypool could be had. It was a bad trade in the end, but I don't fault Poles for trying to improve the position group.

I do fault him for the David Montgomery for DeAndre Swift swap. It has been reported that the Bears did make an offer for Monty, but the Lions offered him more guaranteed money that Bears weren't willing to match or exceed. The Lions offered 3 years and $18M with $11M fully guaranteed ($8.25M at signing). The following offseason the Bears gave DeAndre Swift 3 years and $24M with $14M guaranteed. That was after both the Lions and Eagles had Swift and decided they needed an upgrade at the position. I would rather have Monty for even money and I would DEFINITELY rather have Monty for less money. That to me makes it a worse signing in the big picture because the money and the logic don't make sense. It's a swap that has the Bears just 12 months later reportedly wanting a running back in the draft and rumored to be in on Nick Chubb and speculated that they could be in on Kenneth Walker via trade. I was never arguing Swift vs Davis in a vacuum because, uh, no shit.
