Frank Walks

Known for his role as Kevin on The Office, Brian Baumgartner is serious when it comes to barbecue. One of Braumgartner's most famous moments on The Office was when he dropped the chili pot. The meme helped him launch his first cookbook, "Seriously Good Chili." Now Brian Baumgartner has a second book, "Seriously Good Barbeque." The book has over 100 recipes from all over the country. I took the time to make two of them for Tank Cooks, and then I went for a walk with Brian around Central Park, walking past commencement activities from FIT.

Episode 14: Brian Baumgartner

There is no athlete who meant more to me growing up than Dwight Gooden. My first year of fully following baseball was 1985, when Gooden had one of the greatest seasons in MLB history. Gooden posted a record of 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA and 268 strikeouts to win the pitcher's Triple Crown and Cy Young. Over the next decade, a large mural of Dwight Gooden hung by the Lincoln Tunnel almost as if it was the welcome to New York. I walked with Dwight Gooden a week after he had his #16 retired by the Mets. It was a dream come true.

Fresh off Seton Hall's victory in the NIT, I walked with coach Shaeeh Halloway. A graduate and player at Seton Hall, Coach Sha is a rising star in the NCAA. His first appearance on the grand stage was in 2022, when he led St. Peter's, a #15 seed, to the Elite Eight. In the last two seasons, Coach Sha took a team that was forecasted to be among the bottom of the Big East to a 4th place finish. After being passed over for a tournament bid, he led the Pirates to their first NIT Championship in 71 years. Shaheen Halloway talked about the challenges of coaching in the NIL era as we walked on the campus.

In May, I walked around Branch Brook Park in Newark with NHL legend P.K. Subban. A 13-year NHL defenseman, Subban played with the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and New Jersey Devils. He was a three-time All-Star and won the Norris Trophy in 2013 with Montreal. He wrapped his career with the Devils winning the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2022. P.K. Subban is part of ESPN's coverage of the Stanley Cup Final, which heads to Edmonton for a crucial Game 3 on ABC on Thursday. During our walk, we discussed the state of the Devils, while with New Jersey, Subban provided veteran leadership to a young team. However, the results were not always good which led to me having to face P.K. with my previous mean tweets.

Episode 16: P.K. Subban

On October 16, 2010, Eric LeGrand's life changed forever. While covering a kickoff for Rutgers, LeGrand suffered a severe spinal cord injury. LeGrand was one of Rutgers' top defensive players when he slammed into Army's kick returner Malcolm Brown. The collision left Eric LeGrand paralyzed from the neck down. Instead of lamenting his injuries, LeGrand took it as a challenge and has become an inspiration for Rutgers and spinal injury recovery. Initially unable to breathe on his own, LeGrand worked tirelessly to rehab and eventually got off the ventilator and regained movement in his shoulders. Over the past decade, Eric LeGrand has become a force for Rutgers, as his #52 hangs over SHI Stadium. That is where we walked and talked about the optimism and belief that Eric LeGrand will one day rise from his wheelchair and walk again. Today, Eric LeGrand works for Rutgers Radio and has his own coffee and whisky brands. Both of which help raise money for spinal injury research.
